Death at an Early Age The Classic Indictment of InnerCity Education Jonathan Kozol Robert Coles 9780452262928 Books
Well written story of a young teacher who watched the cruelty and pain inflicted on children by some teachers he worked with in the Boston School system. He noticed how encouragement of kids made a big difference in their ability to learn and love learning and how the twisted minds of some bigoted teachers would quickly destroy that desire. This is clearly an eye opener and is an example of how the system does not always acknowledge teachers who care about kids and are able to inspire them.Tags : Death at an Early Age: The Classic Indictment of Inner-City Education [Jonathan Kozol, Robert Coles] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD In 1964, Jonathan Kozol entered the Boston Public School system to teach fourth grade at one of its most overcrowded inner-city schools. Death at an Early Age The Classic Indictment of InnerCity Education Jonathan Kozol Robert Coles 9780452262928 Books Reviews
This book should be ready by every parent sending thier child off to any school sytem
Jonathan Kozol is one of heroes! I implore anyone who is interested in becoming a teacher to read this book! It will open your eyes and break your heart!
Kozol is relating his experience in an inner-city Boston public school in the mid 1960's. It is almost inconceivable how cruel the teachers were to the black kids. He was fired because of using "unapproved" curriculum. Much of the content is about Stephen who was 8 years old at that time. "Nobody has complained about the things that have happened to Stephen because he does not have any mother or father. Stephen is a ward of the State of Massachusetts and has been placed in a home of poor people who do not want him..."
Violent shaking of kids, and frequent use of the ruler were common even if such actions "were not permitted." Mr. Kozol was almost able to bring Stephen around, but the other teachers kept him in his shell. How people who claim to be teachers can be so cruel is beyond my understanding. These were pathetic excuses who had no business being "teachers". This book will give the reader a better understanding of the hostility from the black community. I don't know the present conditions in the Boston schools here in 2013.
What happened to Stephen? He ended up in a home for the "emotionally disturbed". Very sad.
Very old and brittle pages was afraid to read it. It was a used library book. But served the purpose.
Our school systems still suffer the loss of so many young minds due to short comings similar to those that the Boston School experienced years ago. Kozol's experience is enlightening and a motivator for change. An essential read for parents and educators.
I read and raged and cried my way through this book when it was first published, in the '60s. I have purchased it many times over, as I keep "loaning" it out to others, who are similarly moved. It is the most rational, substantial, and compelling exposure of the systemic means by which the poor (and primarily minority) children of this country are prevented from receiving an education. "Savage Inequalities," published in 1991, updates and expands on the general thesis embodied in "Death"; but no matter how many times I have read this book ("Death") in the intervening half-century, the essential features remain the same. "Death at an Early Age" is an absolute must read for anyone seriously interested in understanding why there continues to be an underclass, why the poor continue to fail to rise up the alleged ladder of opportunity, and why we can't seem to "fix" our schools.
awesome book, take a good look into Bostons racist past, and heart to reflect on how little has changed and how the events have change the school system and public housing not necisarnaly for any better bit different. If you live in Boston you should read it.
